Financial Worries are Worries—Not Facts. The Tigers Lie A Lot.

Monday, October 20th, 2008

Stressful thoughts and feelings about money are not always the final truth, but they will present themselves to you as if they were. Yes you may have money problems, even severe ones—but that doesn’t mean that all hope is lost.

Again, try not to let the saber-toothed tigers in your mind get you too charged up because they’ll throw your energy off balance and trigger your fight or flight response. Then toxic stress hormones will leak into your blood and tissues.

If you follow these worried and frightened thoughts and believe in them, then your financial stress can toss you into waking nightmares. You can get so charged up in mind and body that you don’t realize that what you’re worrying about—isn’t actually happening. That’s why you’ve got to learn how to “stay awake”.

Otherwise you’ll be starring in endless waking dream battles, battles that your body will mistake as true and real life or death struggles. This will leave your mindbody in chronic fight or flight—you’ll be at risk for health problems and the misery of chronic anxiety and depression.

Financial Stress and Saber Toothed Tigers

Sunday, September 21st, 2008

Financial stress goes to the bone of our deepest concern–staying alive.

Hard to look anywhere today without seeing how quickly prices have gone up. My two dogs biscuits have gone form $3.99 to $5.49. At least they don’t realize it. Gas is ridiculous and now it seems that $3.68 a gallon is a low price. Heating oil is over the top. Could go on and on. As I’m sure you know.

Add to that the debt driven stock market and real estate debacles. Once again people already wealthy have been able to juice the system and leave a huge mess for everyone else to clean up.

If you’ve been close to foreclosure or watched your life savings shrink along with the value of your home, or if you just feel beaten up after shopping for groceries–be alert to a real danger. The danger of saber tooth tigers attacking you.

We’re hard wired for a survival response known as the fight or flight response. It kicks in when we’re faced with life-threatening danger. It’s meant for short term use only. The problem is that this hard wiring is not well suited for life today. It’s meant for conditions that are long gone.

It too often triggers in error, when we’re fearful and worried too much. Especially when we’re worried about conditions that reflect or symbolize survival risk, conditions like chronic financial stress.

Our ancestors faced the danger of being lunch for saber toothed tigers. When suddenly confronting that danger–they’d move in to flight or flight–so they could run or fight like hell. If they survived–the fight or flight response would shut down before too long.

Today we face fierce saber toothed tigers. The ones roaming around in our mind. They eat us up with fear and worry and leave us floating around on a river of stress hormones. Many thousands of people drown in this river every day.

If you’re facing chronic financial stress, do your best to develop an action plan that will empower you to feel in control. Seek help doing that–from reliable sources.

Exercise and relaxation training can be very helpful. So can deep breathing. Try taking three deep diaphragmatic breaths, breaths coming into and going out from an area just below your breastbone. On the out breath–just let it go. Don’t walk the breath out–just release it. If you’re alone–sigh on the out breath. At the end of the out breath is a relaxed state, one calm and clear. Tune yourself to that as best as possible. That will help free you from a saber toothed tiger or two.

If you let these saber toothed tigers in your mind alone–without becoming identified or distracted by them–they’ll just come and go. Without triggering the fight or flight response.

We live in strange times on some level. Many people worry about preparing for retirement–yet they don’t give any thought to preparing for death.

I try to remember and connect to the things that really make life worth living. Even the little things like seeing the joy on my dogs faces when they get their expensive bones.

Job Stress and Work Without Soul

Saturday, August 23rd, 2008

Job Stress is the single greatest source of stress in the world
today and it’s maiming and killing people in large numbers. The
shifting patterns of work brought on by globalization and
outsourcing have left many people struggling with feeling
overworked, underpaid and undervalued.

Many people think that outsourcing to countries like India and
China has left American and western European workers
screwed while benefiting Indian and Chinese workers tremendously.
But a closer look tells a different story.

Indians working long hours answering telephone calls from
America and Europe show signs of chronic Job Stress: Heart
Disease, Insomnia, Musculoskeletal Pain and Injury, Depression
and serious Family Problems.

It’s even worse in China. Some Chinese factory workers do
boring, monotonous work for 16 hours a day for little money.
Working under firm deadlines and on high speed assembly
lines—they lose or break about 40,000 fingers annually. And many
of these fingers belong to kids. Chinese factories doing work
for American and European countries often abuse their workers.

Bottom line—work has lost its soul for many people, including
many high paid Americans. Work with soul is work with a
meaningful and a loving connection to life and to others. Such
work used to be quite common. Not any more.

Everything now is moving in the direction of speed and profit
and big time Job Stress—Job Stress that’s ruining the health and
family life of more and more people.

Not good news. But there are solutions.

How about you? How’s your Job? You stressed out?

Greetings–Been Too Long

Well my plans for getting the SR blog and Podcasts going were
sidetracked.

I’ve been researching and writing a new digital book on STRESS –
full time–for about a month now.

It started out to be a much smaller project but once I got into
the material it led the way into much more.

Should have it done soon. I bet it will blow your mind. I was
stunned by what I came across and I think you’ll be too.

On the Podcast front–will be turning to tidy up some editing and
then we’ll be starting things off with an orientation podcast and
an interview I did awhile back with Dr. Jim Lynch. The interview
puts STRESS on a much larger canvas than usual.

You’ll see why your Heart has a language of it’s own and what you
need to know and do to decode its messages.

Hope you’re life is going well and that you’re “Dodging the
Stress Bullet”.

Talk soon…Jim

New Facts About Stress and Stress Relief

Monday, June 9th, 2008

Do You Often Feel Sick, Tired, Anxious or Unhappy?

Do you have difficulty concentrating? Do you feel exhausted long
before the end of the day, but can’t sleep at night? Do suffer
from aches and pains or chronic illness? Do you feel tense,
anxious, down, or unhappy a lot of the time?

If you experience some or many of these symptoms, you’re not
alone. If fact, you are among the hundreds of millions of people
who are sitting on a time bomb called STRESS.

According to the Center for Disease Control, more than 75% of
visits to the doctor are for stress related problems, and 80
cents of every health care dollar goes toward stress. And the
World Health Organization identified stress as the #1 health
problem in the industrialized world.

******************
STRESS IS KILLING US!
******************

Slowly, quietly, and insidiously stress literally wears out and
prematurely ages the body, weakens the immune system, and leads
to chronic health problems and serious diseases such as cancer,
heart disease, diabetes, and rheumatoid arthritis, to name a few.
Day by day, stress disguises itself as depression or unhappiness,
low energy and fatigue, aches and pains, tension and anxiety, and
insomnia.

TAKE A DEEP BREATH AND LOOK AT WHAT THE EXPERTS SAY
**********************************************

We live in a 24/7 world filled with traffic and noise, where
communication is instant, information bombards us at every turn,
and it takes two incomes to support a family. We are
overscheduled and often overwhelmed.

Our jobs can leave stressed out, drained and empty, and our
relationships can leave us confused and burdened. And we can even
feel stuck in an identity that’s too small for who we truly are.

The truth is we’re not wired for this kind of intensity. We’re
wired for a time that’s long gone. That’s Key.

And we pay a steep price.

As a result:

“Stress is a heavy contributor to heart disease, cancer,
respiratory distress, lupus and many other life threatening
illnesses”.
-Dr. Paul Rosch,
Distinguished Medical Physician and Scientist
President: American Institute of Stress“Stress is the Industrialized World’s #1 Health Problem”
-World Health Organization

“Stress is Accountable for 75% of all doctors visits.”
-U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention

“Women with high daytime stress hormone levels had reduced
immunity associated with higher mortality, especially breast
cancer mortality.”
-David Spiegel, MD,
Stanford University Study Director

“The prolonged release of stress hormones can impair our immune
system and leave us open to invasions of cancer cells and
dangerous infections.”
-Dr. Bruce McEwen,
Former Director of Rockefeller University’s Neuroendocrine
Laboratory

Stress can cause some of our most common killers – cancer, heart
disease, and cerebrovascular disease. Stress-related diseases
include depression, ulcers, irritable bowel syndrome,
reproductive dysfunction, and the worsening of diabetes.
-The Endocrine Society

“In our modern society, stress…hormones continue to wash through
the system in high levels, never leaving. Stress leads to
serious health problems”
-Drs. Chrousos
Senior National Institute of Health Scientists

“Chronic stress kills. People wear down. Stress is linked to the
six leading causes of death – heart disease, cancer, lung
ailments, accidents, cirrhosis of the liver, and suicide.”
-Lyle H. Miller, Ph.D. and Alma Dell Smith, Ph.D., Senior Stress
Researchers

“When people are under stress, they look haggard, it’s like they
age before your eyes, and here’s something going on at a
molecular level.” “Chronic stress appears to have the
potential to shorten the life of cells….”The results were
striking,”
-Drs. Elizabeth Blackburn and Elissa Epel”.
-co-authors of National Academy of Sciences article reporting
their research on stress and aging.
